The personal Paleo code is a tremendous resource to allow people to explore the Paleo approach to diet and lifestyle. The paleo approach to diet emphasizes using proteins and vegetables to fuel to body and allow for maximum metabolic function. This approach harkens back to the way humans have evolved in their eating habits since the cavemen days. It is believed that our bodies are hardwired to excel on this type of diet that was predominant before the invention of agriculture.

One thing is for certain, I have used this type of dietary approach to healing patients with modern chronic disease and it works. It is a statistical fact that one out of every two Americans has what we call metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a type of disorder which precedes diabetes. Its hallmark symptoms are midline weight gain, high blood pressure, hormonal imbalances, and blood sugar disorders. The paleo type of diet is the best and quickest solution to this modern disease epidemic.

Produced by the master of integrative medicine Chris Kresser L.ac. out of Berkley California. This Personal Paleo Code is worth a look see.

Enjoy.

…enter the healthy baby code: The healthy baby code was created by a colleague of mine Chris Kresser L.ac. out of Berkley California. Chris maintains a fantastic blog site as well as a podcast where he examines health and wellness with a focus on nutritional protocols. Chris is well versed in the latest research of medicine and has a very successful consulting practice where he blends the best of eastern and western medicine to help patients reach their health goals.

The healthy baby code was created out of a lecture series he was teaching locally in the bay area around the time that Chris and his Wife were pregnant with their first child. The Healthy Baby code is a meticulously researched, hugely informative, and fun interactive way to learn how to grow a healthy baby. If you are getting ready to conceive you owe it you not only yourself but also your future child to check this out.

There is currently a bill before the house of congress called the food safety and modernization act. Now depending on who you ask this bill is for the benefit of different groups. Purportedly it is to benefit all of the consumer citizens of the United States to protect us from unsafe foods and outbreaks of disease such as the recent salmonella scare. My gut instinct tells me different. I fear that this bill is to further centralize corporate power for big Agribusiness. In the way that governmental oversight will exert undo pressure on small cottage farming industry and producers of supposed “unsafe foods” such as raw cheese, raw milk, and organic non-irradiated meats and vegetables. This bill is under review for the next two weeks by congress before the Christmas recess. If the bill becomes law only time will tell if my gut instinct is correct, however by then it will be too late. If you are in favor of less government control over what you put on your dinner table and are in favor of eating “unsafe” foods such as raw cheese, raw milk, and local produce like I am, then I urge you to contact your state congressman NOW.

With that I will leave you with a passage from the Book Nasty Brutish and Short?

The first happy lesson gleaned from a study of traditional diets is that healthy food can and should taste good; that we can put butter on our porridge and cook in lard, that it’s ok to consume whole milk, fatty meats liver and onions, shrimp and lobster even insects, if you like to: That heavenly sauces made from bone broth and cream confer more benefits than pills and powders and ersatz low-fat concoctions, the stepchildren of technology, pawned off as health foods.

Wisely used, technology can take the drudgery out of cooking, and help us bring properly grown and prepared foods to the marketplace. Wrongly used, technology produces breads that are soft and sweet rather than sour and chewy; coca-cola rather than cottage industry lacto fermented brews, bouillon cubes rather than homemade broth; sugar embalmed ketchup with infinite shelf life rather than enzyme rich condiments and pickles preserved to last a few months in a way that adds nutrients, instead of taking them away.

The second lesson is that healthy eating is good for the ecology. The building blocks of a healthy diet are pesticide-free foods raised on a mineral-rich soil, and healthy animals that live free to manure the paddocks of thousands of farms, rather than suffer in factories, confined to misery and disease. The road to health starts with a willingness to pay a good price for such food, thus rewarding the farmer who preserves the land through wise farming practices, rather than the agribusiness that mines the soil for quick profits.

….according to Kelly Osborne.

I recently read an article on Kelly Osborne, daughter of Rock God Ozzy Osborne, in a fitness magazine. She attributed her amazing body transformation to three, well four actually if you include exercise, easy steps.

1. She started eating breakfast

2. She replaced her soda consumption with plain ol water

3. She made sure she kept her eating consistent throughout the day with a healthy snack if needed.

I was happy to read about her success in this fitness magazine because these are the exact steps that I teach patients wanting to lose weight. These three steps are not really magic but they sure seem to work like magic in the rapid and permanent balancing of the metabolism and resultant losing of weight.

Let me explain why these steps are the real deal when it comes to natural weight loss.

Almost all of my patients who state they want to lose weight DO NOT currently eat breakfast. Skipping breakfast allows the body to dip into a starvation mode as the last meal was taken over twelve hours previous. When the body is in this starvation mode, the next meal that is eaten is stored by the body because it believes that it has to store calories in case it goes into starvation again. Now imagine doing this every single day of your life……

Liquid calories in the form of soda and soft drinks are the single biggest cause of Americas obesity problem. Period. Why, you may ask? It is because they raise the body’s blood sugar to exorbitant levels quickly which leads to the destruction of the normal metabolic function. Ultra Sweet whole foods such as fruits do not raise the blood sugar to these ridiculous rates because they contain fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins which buffer the sugars present in the fruit and prevent the body’s metabolism from being thrown out of whack.

Kelly Osborne’s last secret to her weight loss, taking healthy snacks, reinforces the notion of allowing the body’s blood sugar levels to be even and normal throughout a 24 hour period.

This is the secret to real weight loss folks. And it is not really much of a secret. In fact it is pretty easy. Eat real foods, throughout the day, and move your body and you shall be trim!

Baby cows fed on pasteurized skim milk develop a condition of joint stiffness and exhibit the condition of failure to thrive. When raw butter fat is added to their diet their symptoms are reversed and they go on to thrive.

A researcher by the name of Rosalind Wulzen isolated a compound that is present in raw animal fat. This compound is known as the Wulzen factor. Wulzen found that this factor protects the joints against stiffness and calcification. It also protects against the hardening of the arteries, cataracts, and calcification of the glands.

Could it be the case that butter is actually extremely beneficial to your health? Could it also be the case that much of the purported “scientific” nutritional advice of the last 50 years, which warned against the consumption of saturated animal fats in favor of margarine was dead wrong?

The delicious aroma of melting butter on my morning ezekiel toast tells me that the answers are yes, and yes.

Let me just state one thing from the very beginning. Learning to cook healthy foods and preparing them for yourself and your family daily is the absolute best insurance policy against long term and short term disease and illness. Period.

With that being said, while flipping around the channels the other night I stumbled across Chef Gordon Ramsay in the show Hells Kitchen. While I did not linger on this program very long, as I found it offensive for reasons to follow I did have one rather interesting observation.

For those of you unfamiliar this show consists of Gordon Ramsay berating, belittling, and screaming at young chef apprentices while they frantically try to prepare a meal for diners in a restaurant setting.

When you prepare healthy delicious food in a relaxed content manner in your own home, the people lucky enough to eat this material and spiritual nourishment can literally feel the energy with which you have prepared this food. It contains a little something I like to refer to as Vitamin L. Vitamin Love. You ever wonder why Granmas cooking tasted the best? She put every ounce of her heart and soul in that food especially for you.

So when I observed the fledgling chefs under Gordon Ramsay hurriedly preparing various “gourmet” dishes while he screamed at them I could not help but think about the effects that this food would have on the diners who consumed it. I am nearly certain that most if not all of the patrons were deeply unsatisfied with the meal. I am willing to bet that many of them had indigestion after finishing the food. And I will bet that at least one or two of the diners had a fight with their spouse on the way home from the restaurant.

Gordon Ramsay….why does food provoke such negative and unpleasant behaviour with you? Were you missing a few hugs from Mom in the kitchen growing up?

A Report by Dr Hyman Engleberg M.D. published in the prestigious Medical Journal The Lancet reported that primary prevention trials have shown that cholesterol lowering drugs used in middle aged patients have shown a correlation with an increase in deaths caused by either suicide or violence. Is this coincidental? Possibly, however the mechanism by which this may be explained is based in basic physiology. When cholesterol levels are low there is a pronounced decrease in the number of serotonin receptors in the brain. Serotonin is the happy brain chemical which allows us to better handle stress. A lowered serum cholesterol may contribute to a decrease in brain serotonin leading to higher stress levels and poor suppression of aggressive behaviours.

A similar story published in the Lancet volume 339 explores the myth that a lowfat diet will make you “feel better and increase your joy of living.” Studies have shown that lowfat diets are associated with increased rates of depression, psychological problems, fatigue, violence, and suicide.

Food for thought……or should I say BUTTER for thought! mmmmm real Butter
