Now obviously as I am a practicing acupuncturist, I feel that Acupuncture is a tremendous therapy for lower back pain.  In fact that is how I came to develop such an affinity for acupuncture, through my own lower back pain.  During an acute back pain occurence I received acupuncture treatment and was amazed with the results.  Over the years I have treated successfully many many cases of both mild and severe lower back pain.

I want to tell you about a program that I used that worked even better than acupuncture as a long term, (and I hate to use this word) “cure” for my lower back pain.

The system is called the Egoscue method.  A strange word indeed (Ego gone ASKEW??!)  It is named after the inventors last name Pete Egoscue.  A little back story on Pete.  Pete served our country in the vietnam war and was injured.  In order to heal his own injuries he plunged his own analytical mind into the study of the human frame and physiology.  In the process he discovered what he believes to be the source of all chronic and acute musculoskeletal pain.  This is what he terms “muscle imbalances”.  The idea being that each muscle has a preset length in relation to its opposite muscle group(think bicep vs tricep) if one of these muscles becomes shortened then it will pull the corresponding bones and muscles around it out of their normal position and range of motion and thus begins the cycle of chronic pain and dysfunction.

The egoscue system prescribes specific “E-cises” which are designed to correct specific muscle imbalances in different parts of the body:Neck, Low Back, Mid Back, Shoulder etc.   These “E-cises” require nothing more than time and repetition.  They are non strenous and actually can be relaxing.  This system really really works for Chronic Pain.

Whats the catch?  Here is the Rub:  these exercises take time and repetition to work.  You have to do the program as outlined in his book day in and day out for about 20 minutes to a half hour a day for at least one month if not six months.  If you follow this program, I can tell you from experience, your pain will be eliminated at the source.

Whats that you say?  You do not have the dedication, time, commitment, energy to perform this program faithfully.  Well than thats okay you have three other options: !surgery 2: Pain Meds 3: or Acupuncture.

Something to remember is that there are a lot of different ways to heal and it is ultimately up to you to decide how far you want to go on your own healing path.
